Rome Ciampino (CIA) is Romeβs smaller, secondary airport located approximately 15km southeast of the centre. It handles mainly budget airlines β Ryanair operates the largest presence here β and receives fewer intercontinental flights than Fiumicino. Transfer options are more limited than at FCO, but distances are shorter.
Shuttle bus: the standard option
Dedicated airport shuttle buses are the most convenient public transfer from Ciampino to Roma Termini. Three main operators run the route:
Terravision: approximately β¬5 one-way (advance booking online), every 30β60 minutes, 40β50 minutes to Termini.
SIT Bus Shuttle: approximately β¬5β6 one-way, runs to both Termini and Ciampino Tiburtina, 40β50 minutes.
TAM: approximately β¬5β7 one-way, timed to coincide with Ryanair arrivals.
Buy tickets online in advance for the lowest fares β prices rise when bought on the bus. Buses depart from directly outside the arrivals exit.
Train: two legs, lower cost
There is no station inside Ciampino airport. However, bus line 520 (ATAC) connects the terminal to Ciampino railway station in approximately 10 minutes (approximately β¬1.50 as of 2026). From there, regional trains to Roma Termini run every 15β30 minutes and take approximately 15 minutes (approximately β¬2.10 as of 2026).
Total journey: approximately 40β45 minutes, total cost approximately β¬3.60. This is the cheapest public option but requires more effort with luggage and coordination.
Taxi: fastest and most straightforward
Licensed white taxis queue at the official rank outside arrivals. Ciampino has its own fixed-rate structure (separate from Fiumicino):
- Within the Aurelian Walls (historic centre, Trastevere, Aventino, Prati): approximately β¬31 fixed as of 2026
- To Roma Termini area: covered by the above fixed rate
- Up to 4 passengers and standard luggage
Always confirm the fixed rate before getting in. Journey time is approximately 25β45 minutes depending on traffic.
Private transfer: predictable cost and door-to-door service
A pre-booked private transfer picks you up at arrivals with a name board and delivers you directly to your accommodation. Prices from Ciampino typically start at approximately β¬25β35 for a standard sedan as of 2026.
Book a private transfer from Ciampino
This makes the most sense for late arrivals, early departures, groups of 3 or more, or travellers with lots of luggage who do not want to navigate buses.
Which option is right for you?
| Option | Fare (approx.) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuttle bus | β¬5β7/person | 40β50 min | Most travellers |
| Train (bus + train) | ~β¬3.60/person | 40β45 min | Light luggage, budget travellers |
| Taxi (fixed rate) | β¬31 (up to 4) | 25β45 min | Groups or heavy luggage |
| Private transfer | from β¬25 | 25β45 min | Pre-planned, door-to-door |
Ciampino is a smaller, less complex airport than Fiumicino β arrivals are quick and the shuttle buses are reliable. For most budget airline passengers, the Terravision or SIT shuttle to Termini is the straightforward choice. Groups of three or more will find a taxi or private transfer competitive on price.
Practical notes
- Ciampino airport has limited food options airside β if you have a long layover, plan ahead
- Shuttle buses can fill up quickly on busy Ryanair arrival slots β book online for a guaranteed seat
- Peak summer traffic (JulyβAugust) can add 15β30 minutes to any road-based transfer
