Quick Answer
Bergamo rewards visitors who give it more than a transit stop. Italy’s most visited airport per capita (Bergamo Orio al Serio handles over 15 million passengers annually, predominantly Ryanair) means many pass through without seeing the Città Alta — the medieval hilltop city enclosed by 6 km of Venetian walls (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017). May to June and September to October offer the best balance of weather and manageable crowds. For accommodation in Città Bassa or Città Alta, see Bergamo hotels, and plan your time with Bergamo tours. The Bergamo city guide covers the funicular and walking routes.

Peak Season: June to August
Bergamo’s summer pattern is shaped by proximity to Milan — 47 km south-west, approximately 50 minutes by train (Trenitalia, from €4.90). On weekdays in July and August, the Città Alta is busy but manageable. On Saturdays and Sundays it fills significantly between 11:00 and 19:00, as Milan residents use it as a day trip. The Via Colleoni — the Città Alta’s main pedestrian street — requires patience at peak hours.
Temperatures reach 25–28°C in July and August, occasionally touching 32°C during heat waves. The Città Alta’s stone streets hold heat; the Venetian walls provide an elevated walking circuit with exposure but views across the Lombard plain to the Alps that are most dramatic when visibility is high. For cooler walking, the sentiero delle mura (wall circuit path) is shadier than the inner streets and takes approximately 90 minutes for the full circuit.
The City Walls Festival runs June through August: open-air film screenings and concerts on and around the Venetian fortifications. Events are typically free or low-cost. The Donizetti Opera Festival (Bergamo is the birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti, 1797–1848) runs in autumn and winter, but chamber concerts occur through summer.
Hotels in Città Bassa — the modern lower city, practical but without the Città Alta’s character — range from €80–110/night in peak summer. Within the Città Alta itself, hotels are fewer and more expensive: €100–150/night in summer for a standard room. Airport transit hotels near Orio al Serio start from €60/night.
Shoulder Season: April to May and September to October
April brings the Bergamo Music Festival — a programme of chamber, orchestral, and choral concerts spread across the historic churches of the Città Alta, including the Cappella Colleoni and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The basilica’s interior is one of the most richly decorated in Lombardy, combining Romanesque exterior with a Baroque interior of tapestries, inlaid marble, and gilded ceilings; entry is free.
May is the ideal month. Temperatures of 18–20°C suit the walk up to the Città Alta — the funicular from Piazzale Mercato delle Scarpe takes 4 minutes and costs approximately €1.30 one-way — and the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo’s internationally significant art museum (Mantegna, Raphael, Titian, Lotto), is uncrowded. Entry costs approximately €10.
September sees the vintage car rally (Mille Miglia sometimes passes through the wider Lombard region) and the Fiera di Sant’Alessandro fair (26 August–early September) — one of northern Italy’s oldest agricultural fairs, held in Città Bassa, mixing livestock, produce, and a street market.
October is cool (14°C) but autumn colour on the pre-Alps above the city is striking. The funicular to Città Alta runs year-round; a second funicular from Città Alta to the San Vigilio hill above (approximately €2 return) gives views over the entire Lombard plain on clear days.
Off Season: November to March
November through January brings the characteristic Lombard fog — heavy, flat, and persistent in Città Bassa, but the Città Alta frequently sits above the inversion layer. On a foggy November morning, the upper city emerges from cloud with the Alps above and white mist below: an atmospheric combination that justifies a winter visit for those not averse to cold.
Christmas markets in Piazza Cavour (Città Bassa) and events in the Città Alta run through December. The Donizetti Opera Festival, which marks the composer’s November birth and December death anniversaries, brings opera and chamber productions to the Donizetti Theatre and other venues December through January.
Hotels in Città Bassa average €55–70/night in low season. The Accademia Carrara and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore maintain regular winter hours.
