The Rome to Naples train is one of Italyโ€™s most convenient intercity routes. The Frecciarossa covers the roughly 220km in approximately 1 hour 10 minutes, fares start well under โ‚ฌ20 if you book ahead, and the service runs throughout the day. Naples is close enough for a day trip from Rome, and fast enough to make it comfortable. This guide covers everything you need to know about the journey.

Route overview: Termini to Napoli Centrale

All high-speed trains depart from Roma Termini, Romeโ€™s main station, located in the city centre. They arrive at Napoli Centrale, Naplesโ€™ principal station, in Piazza Garibaldi โ€” a short metro or taxi ride from the historic waterfront and city centre.

A small number of Frecciarossa services stop at Napoli Afragola before Centrale. Afragola is a newer high-speed station on the outskirts of Naples with no useful onward connections for most travellers. Always check your ticket shows Napoli Centrale as the final stop.

Frecciarossa vs Italo

Two operators run competing high-speed services on the Romeโ€“Naples route.

Frecciarossa (Trenitalia) is the national operator. Trains are reliable, comfortable, and offer four classes: Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive. Standard class comes with power sockets, a fold-down tray, and adequate legroom. Book at trenitalia.com or via an aggregator. Frecciarossa runs more frequent departures on this route than Italo.

Italo (NTV) is the private competitor. Its trains are broadly equivalent in comfort and speed. Italo tends to have fewer peak-hour departures on this corridor but can undercut Frecciarossa on off-peak tickets. Their loyalty scheme (Italo Piรน) is worth signing up for if you travel this route regularly. Book at italotreno.it.

Ticket classes and prices

Approximate fares as of 2026, booked in advance:

Walk-up fares on the day typically run โ‚ฌ40-65 in second class. The cheapest Super Economy and Low Cost fares are non-refundable and non-changeable โ€” confirm your travel dates before purchasing. Mid-tier fares allow changes for a fee. Both operators use dynamic pricing, so the earlier you book, the lower the fare.

When to travel

Trains run from around 05:30 to 22:30 in each direction, with departures roughly every 30 minutes at peak times. The busiest windows are 07:00-09:30 from Rome and 17:00-20:00 from Naples โ€” both tend to carry a price premium. Shift your departure by 30-60 minutes on either side and fares often drop by 20-30%.

Tuesday and Wednesday are consistently the cheapest days to travel. Summer weekends and public holidays (especially Ferragosto in August and the Easter period) attract significant price premiums and sell out faster.

Slow train option: Intercity

Trenitalia also runs Intercity (IC) trains between Rome and Naples. These take around 2 hours, stop at a few intermediate stations (typically Formia-Gaeta and Caserta), and cost approximately โ‚ฌ12-18 in second class. Fares are largely fixed, so there is no advance-booking advantage. For travellers in no hurry, the Intercity offers a relaxed, cheaper alternative.

IC trains arrive at Napoli Centrale, so the onward logistics are identical to the high-speed services.

Getting to Roma Termini

Roma Termini is served by metro lines A and B and dozens of bus routes. From Fiumicino (FCO) airport, the Leonardo Express takes 32 minutes and runs every 30 minutes directly to Termini. From Ciampino (CIA) airport, take the Terravision shuttle (around 45 minutes) or a taxi (around 30 minutes). Both are straightforward.

Getting from Napoli Centrale

Naplesโ€™ metro Line 1 and Line 2 both stop at Napoli Centrale (Garibaldi station), connecting to the city centre and waterfront. Line 1 is the most useful for tourists, linking to Toledo (the pedestrian shopping street), Dante, and Museo (for the National Archaeological Museum). Taxis queue outside the main entrance โ€” metered, with city-centre fares typically โ‚ฌ10-15.

For Pompeii: take the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Naples (Porta Nolana station or Garibaldi, adjacent to Centrale) to Pompeii Scavi โ€“ Villa dei Misteri. The journey takes around 35-40 minutes and costs approximately โ‚ฌ2.80 as of 2026.

Naples as a day trip from Rome

The 1h 10min journey makes Naples a very viable day trip, particularly if you want to focus on one specific area โ€” the historic centre and pizza trail, the National Archaeological Museum, or a combined trip to Pompeii.

A workable day-trip structure: depart Rome around 08:00-09:00, spend 5-6 hours in Naples or Pompeii, and return on a late-afternoon or early-evening train. The last Frecciarossa back to Rome departs around 21:30.

If you want to combine Naples and Pompeii properly, or add the Amalfi Coast, a one- or two-night stay in Naples makes more sense. Hotels in Naples.

What to see in Naples

Arriving into one of Italyโ€™s most intense cities, youโ€™re within reach of the Spaccanapoli old town (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Castel Nuovo, Castel dellโ€™Ovo, and the Lungomare seafront promenade. The National Archaeological Museum holds the finest collection of objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum outside the sites themselves. For pizza, the historic Quartieri Spagnoli neighbourhood and Via dei Tribunali in the centro storico are the places to eat.
