Quick Answer
Turin is one of Italy’s most satisfying year-round cities for visitors willing to engage with its industrial heritage, royal history, and food culture. April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. The city pairs naturally with day trips to the Langhe wine region (Barolo, Barbaresco) and the alpine ski resorts. Book accommodation in the city centre at hotels in Turin and arrange activities with Turin tours.

Peak Season: April to June
Turin’s peak is not driven by mass tourism but by its own cultural calendar. The Salone del Libro (Book Fair) in May is one of Italy’s largest literary events, filling the Lingotto convention centre and drawing tens of thousands of visitors over five days. Hotel prices during the fair can double; book three to four months ahead if your dates overlap.
May outside the Book Fair is when Turin is most enjoyable: the Royal Palace and Palazzo Madama (both Savoy-dynasty properties) are accessible without queues, the Egyptian Museum — the world’s second most important after Cairo — is manageable, and the porticoed streets around Via Roma and the Quadrilatero Romano are pleasant for walking.
Spring also offers the clearest views to the Alps: on clear days from Piazza Vittorio Veneto or the hill park of Parco della Rimembranza, the Monviso and Monte Rosa massifs are visible. By July, heat haze softens the view.
Shoulder Season: September to October
September is when the Langhe wine region — 70km south of Turin — enters harvest season. Day trips to Barolo, La Morra, or Barbaresco are straightforward by hire car: the drive south on the A6 autostrada takes about an hour. Wine estates offer harvest tastings from late September, and the Nebbiolo grape that produces Barolo begins picking in October.
October features CioccolaTò, Turin’s chocolate festival, in odd-numbered years — a celebration of the city’s role as Italy’s chocolate capital (Turin invented gianduiotto, the hazelnut chocolate, in the early 19th century). The festival occupies Via Roma for several days and draws significant crowds, though not enough to cause accommodation strain.
Off Season: November to February
Turin in winter is cold — January averages 1°C and snow is possible — but the city’s 18km of covered arcades (second only to Bologna) make it navigable in poor weather. The Christmas market in Piazza Castello is one of northern Italy’s best, and the Turin city Christmas lights along Via Po are switched on from late November.
January and February are ideal for the Egyptian Museum: it’s the most important collection of Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo and is far less visited in winter than summer. Tickets (approximately €18) are walkup in January. The Museo Nazionale del Cinema in the Mole Antonelliana also runs comfortably year-round.
