Quick Answer

Naples rewards visitors almost year-round, but April to May and September to October are the most comfortable and practical. Winter is genuinely mild and cheap by Italian standards. For accommodation in central Naples or the seafront, see hotels in Naples. For the city itself, visit our Naples city guide.

Peak Season: June to August

Naples in summer is lively but demanding. The historic centre (Spaccanapoli and the Spanish Quarter) gets very hot — the narrow alleys trap heat, and by 1pm most visitors are searching for a bar with air conditioning. Ferry queues from Molo Beverello to Capri routinely run 30–45 minutes, and the islands themselves are at maximum capacity.

That said, summer has genuine energy. The waterfront at Mergellina is lively until late, Pizzeria Sorbillo and its competitors on Via dei Tribunali serve until midnight, and the cultural programme at the Maschio Angioino and Parco Virgiliano includes outdoor concerts.

Hotels in central Naples run roughly €90–130 per night in peak season — notably cheaper than Rome or Florence for equivalent quality.

Shoulder Season: April to May and September to October

May is arguably Naples’ best month. The Bay of Naples is clear and blue, Pompeii is walkable without the summer heat (entry from €18, open from 9am), and ferries to Capri and Ischia run full daily schedules with comfortable capacity. An early morning visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum — home to the Farnese collection and Pompeii artefacts — is achievable without queuing.

September brings the Pizzafest celebrations (usually in late September), when dozens of Naples pizzerias set up at the lakefront, and temperatures of 26°C make the Posillipo coastal walk very pleasant. The ferry crowds thin compared to August, though Capri remains busy until late October.

October is underrated: still warm enough for coastal trips, olive harvest season starts in Campania, and the city has a settled, unhurried feel.

Off Season: November to March

Naples in winter surprises most visitors. January temperatures average 10°C — cold for Italy but mild by northern European standards — and the city’s museums, including the extraordinary National Archaeological Museum, are largely tourist-free. The Pompeii site itself is uncrowded and the light on Vesuvius is often clearer than in hazy summer.

January and February hotel rates make Naples one of Italy’s most affordable cities: three-star central accommodation from €50–70 per night. The Christmas presepe (nativity scene) tradition is deeply rooted here — Via San Gregorio Armeno is the city’s dedicated street of nativity crafts, busy from late November.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Naples?
April and May are ideal: temperatures of 18–22°C, Pompeii and Herculaneum visits are comfortable, and ferries to Capri and Ischia run on full schedules. September is equally good and adds the bonus of pizza festivals and harvest season in the Campania countryside.
What is the cheapest time to visit Naples?
January and February are the cheapest months, with central hotels available from €50–70 per night. Naples is far less expensive than Rome or Venice even in peak season, but winter offers the best value of all. Flights from northern Europe are frequently under €50 return.
When should I avoid visiting Naples?
July and August bring intense heat — 30–32°C consistently, sometimes reaching 36°C — and crowded ferries to the islands. The historic centre streets are narrow and poorly shaded, making midday walking uncomfortable. Ferragosto weekend (around 15 August) sees reduced services and many local businesses closed.
