Three separate air transport actions are confirmed for Italian airports this September, with the first falling on 11 September 2026.

11 September: Sardinia Airports and Poste Air Cargo

Two airports in Sardinia are in the confirmed strike window:

  • Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB): GEASAR ground staff are striking for a full 24 hours. All flights through Olbia on 11 September carry disruption risk throughout the day.
  • Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG): SOGAER staff will walk out for four hours, 12:00โ€“16:00. Afternoon departures carry the highest cancellation risk; morning and evening flights may operate normally, but knock-on delays are possible.
  • Poste Air Cargo โ€” national: Technical flight crew at the cargo carrier are striking on a national basis for the full day.

If you are flying to or from Sardinia on 11 September, check your flight status with your airline from 10 September. Airlines typically confirm cancellations 24 hours in advance.

13 September: Rome Airport Security

A Rome airport security staff action is confirmed for 13 September. This compounds the broader national aviation action already called for the same date. Passengers connecting through Rome Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) on 13 September should allow extra time and check their booking from 12 September.

30 September: ENAV and Techno Sky โ€” National

Air navigation services staff are striking nationwide on 30 September 2026. ENAV manages Italian airspace; a full-day action affects scheduling across all Italian airports, including departures from Rome, Milan, Florence, and Naples.

What to Do

  • Check with your airline directly. Most carriers post cancellation lists 24 hours before the affected date via their app or website.
  • Rebooking rights. Airlines operating out of EU airports must offer re-routing or a full refund if your flight is cancelled. Read our guide to Italian flight delay rights for what you are and are not entitled to claim when a strike is involved. If your carrier cannot rebook you quickly, search for alternative flights to Italy across carriers.
  • Alternative routes to Sardinia. If your Olbia or Cagliari flight is cancelled, ferry services from Civitavecchia, Livorno, and Genoa reach Sardinia โ€” see getting around Italy for routes and operators.
  • Check your insurance. With three strike windows this month, travel insurance for Italy can cover pre-paid accommodation and emergency rebooking costs that EU261 does not address.
  • Allow extra buffer on 13 September for any itinerary touching Rome airports.

We will update this article if further dates are confirmed.
