Italy in August: Ferragosto, Strike Truce & Traffic

August in Italy requires planning around several overlapping disruptions — but it also offers one of the best periods for uncrowded city tourism once the main Ferragosto wave has passed.

Black Traffic Days: August 1 and 8

The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure designates peak departure weekends as “black days” (bollino nero), when southbound and coastal motorways reach gridlock. Today (August 1) is the first of this summer’s two national black days; the second falls on August 8. If you’re driving any major autostrada — particularly the A1 Rome–Naples, A14 Adriatic coast, or A23 towards the Alps — expect delays of 2–4 hours during the 08:00–20:00 window.

Trains and local transport are unaffected by road designations but will be extremely busy. Book reserved seats in advance.

The Strike Truce: Good News Through September 5

Italy’s annual summer transport strike truce runs from July 27 to September 5, 2026. During this period, organised labour suspensions prevent disruptive walkouts across rail, airports, and public transit. Travellers this August benefit from significantly lower risk of the sudden transit strikes that can strand journeys in spring and autumn. The truce lifts on September 6 — book your return before then if strike risk is a concern.

Ferragosto Week: August 13–17

Ferragosto is Italy’s national summer break. Centered on the August 15 Assumption Day public holiday, most small businesses, restaurants, and local shops across the country close from August 13–17 (some from August 10–20). Major tourist attractions, museums, and national monuments remain open — they see their highest visitor numbers during this window.

In Milan, this is actually one of the best weeks to visit: the city empties of residents, hotel prices drop, and popular sites have shorter queues than any other time of year. Our Milan city guide notes Ferragosto as an underrated option. Rome follows a similar pattern, though the Vatican and Colosseum remain fully operational. See our Rome page for August-specific tips.

Trenitalia Maintenance Closures: August 2–28

Trenitalia is running reduced-frequency intercity services between August 2 and 28 on several regional lines due to planned infrastructure maintenance. Affected routes include sections of the Rome–Ancona and Genoa–Ventimiglia lines. High-speed Frecciarossa and Frecciabianca services on the primary Milan–Rome–Naples corridor are not affected.

Check before you travel and consider booking Frecciarossa where possible for guaranteed full-frequency service.
