Where to Stay in Sardinia: Best Hotels by Area and Budget
Sardinia is large and most visitors underestimate how much driving is involved between areas. Where you stay depends on whether your priority is beaches (and which coast), archaeology, the interior, or a city base.
Cagliari
The capital is the best base for southern Sardinia — Nuraghe Su Nuraxi, the beaches of Villasimius, and the Sinis Peninsula are all within day-trip distance.
Budget (€45–80/night): B&Bs and small hotels in the Marina district (between the port and Castello). Several hostels and cheap guesthouses.
Mid-range (€80–140/night): Boutique hotels in the Castello quarter and Marina. Several converted from historical buildings with original architecture.
Top-end (€150–300/night): T Hotel, Regina Margherita. Cagliari doesn’t have many luxury properties but these are the standouts.
Alghero
A popular base in the north-west — good beaches nearby, attractive old town, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Budget (€50–80/night): Rooms in the old town, B&Bs along the seafront promenade.
Mid-range (€85–150/night): Hotels in the old town or along Via Giovanni XXIII facing the sea. Several boutique options with sea views.
Top-end (€150–300/night): Limited but a few quality options near the old town walls.
Olbia and the Costa Smeralda
Olbia is the practical entry hub (airport, ferry port). Most visitors pass straight through to the coast.
Budget (€50–80/night): Olbia has acceptable budget accommodation. Not much reason to linger.
Mid-range (€90–200/night) — Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo: These are the main resorts of the Costa Smeralda. Mid-range here is expensive by Italian standards.
Top-end (€300–1,000+/night): The Cala di Volpe hotel (opened 1963, built to resemble a traditional Sardinian village) and the Cervo Hotel in Porto Cervo are the flagship properties of the Costa Smeralda. These are among the most expensive hotels in Italy.
Alternative: Stay in Arzachena or San Teodoro (slightly south of the Costa Smeralda area) for significantly lower prices with good beach access.
Nuoro and the east coast
Nuoro itself has limited accommodation but is the gateway to the Golfo di Orosei and the Barbagia.
Cala Gonone: A small resort village at the base of the cliffs above the Golfo di Orosei. The best base for boat trips to Cala Goloritzé and the other beaches. Several hotels and rental apartments. Books out early in summer.
Santa Maria Navarrese: Quieter alternative base on the southern end of the Golfo di Orosei.
Beach-focused bases
Villasimius (south-east): Excellent beaches, more relaxed than Costa Smeralda. Several good mid-range hotels and apartments. 45 minutes from Cagliari.
Pula (south-west of Cagliari): Near the Nora archaeological site (Phoenician and Roman town) and good beaches. Agriturismo options available.
Is Arutas and Oristano area (west coast): The Sinis Peninsula has one of Sardinia’s most unusual beaches (quartz grain). Limited accommodation; mainly B&Bs and apartments.
Agriturismo
Farm stays (agriturismo) are particularly good in Sardinia — the island has a strong tradition of rural hospitality, and many farms offer half-board with home-produced food (cheese, cured meats, wine, olive oil). The Barbagia area has the highest concentration. Prices range from €60 to €120 per person including meals.
Book direct where possible — many small properties don’t appear on major booking platforms.
Booking tips
- July–August: Books out many months ahead, especially Costa Smeralda and Cala Gonone. Prices at their peak — often double shoulder season rates.
- May–June and September–October: Excellent availability, 30–50% lower prices, sea still warm in September.
- Off-season: Many coastal hotels and beach-side restaurants close October to April. Cities (Cagliari, Alghero, Olbia) remain open year-round.
- A car is essential for most Sardinia itineraries — make sure your accommodation has parking or is outside ZTL zones in Cagliari’s historic centre.
