Best Hotels in Verona: Where to Stay by Budget and Location
Verona is compact — the historic centre is walkable in 20 minutes — so location matters less than in larger Italian cities. The key choice is between staying inside the Roman walls (more expensive, more atmospheric) and staying just outside (better value, still walkable).
Historic centre (within the Roman walls)
The best location for atmosphere, walking to the Arena, the Piazza delle Erbe, and restaurants. Streets are pedestrianised and quiet at night.
Budget (€65–100/night): Limited options in the historic centre at this price. B&Bs and small guesthouses in the streets between the Arena and the river. Quality is variable — read reviews carefully.
Mid-range (€110–180/night): Good boutique hotels in the historic centre. Several former palazzos converted to hotels, often with courtyard access and original features. The area between the Arena and Piazza Bra has good concentration.
Top-end (€200–400/night): Due de Torri Hotel (14th-century palazzo, one of the oldest hotels in Italy), Hotel Gabbia d’Oro (historic centre, frescoed ceilings), and the Palazzo Victoria (a 12th-century structure). These are genuinely impressive buildings.
Around Piazza Bra and the Arena
The area immediately around the Arena is convenient for opera season visitors. The Piazza Bra itself has several good hotels.
Mid-range (€100–170/night): Several well-positioned hotels directly on or adjacent to the Piazza Bra. Better availability during opera season than the narrower historic streets.
Near the train station (Porta Nuova)
Verona Porta Nuova station is 15 minutes walk from the historic centre — easy on foot or by short bus/taxi. Hotels here are cheaper and include all the international chain options.
Budget (€50–80/night): Standard chain hotels and budget guesthouses. Good if saving money on accommodation to spend on the opera or wine.
Mid-range (€80–130/night): Better chain hotels in this area — NH, Crowne Plaza, Best Western. Reliable if uninspiring.
Opera season considerations
The Verona Opera Festival runs July–August. During this period:
- Hotels fill up on performance nights (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday typically)
- Prices are at their annual peak
- Book 2–3 months ahead for the better hotels
- Post-opera dinner reservations must also be made ahead — restaurants fill up
If attending the opera, staying within walking distance of the Arena is worth the premium — the audience spills out after midnight and the mood is excellent.
Booking tips
- Verona has a relatively limited hotel stock compared to Venice or Verona — book 3–4 weeks ahead in spring and autumn.
- Check the Arena opera calendar before booking dates: non-performance nights are significantly cheaper and less crowded.
- Several hotels in the historic centre have no parking; use the multi-storey car parks at Piazza Cittadella or Piazza Arsenale.
- Breakfast included is standard at most hotels above budget level.
