Best Hotels in Trento: Where to Stay in the Dolomite Gateway

· Updated · 4 min read City Guide
Green alpine valley with scattered mountain huts and a dramatic rocky Dolomites peak, Trentino, Italy

Trento is the most underrated city in northern Italy. The historic centre is beautiful and largely overlooked by international visitors, the wine region (Trentino DOC) produces some of Italy’s best whites, and the Dolomites begin 40 kilometres to the north. Prices are well below Bolzano and significantly below Venice.

Where to Stay

Historic centre — the best base. The Piazza del Duomo, the Castello del Buonconsiglio, and the Renaissance frescoed facades are all walkable. The historic centre has a genuinely local atmosphere — this is a city Italians live in rather than just visit.

Near the train station — practical for arrivals and for Dolomite day trips (the train to Bolzano runs frequently; buses to the Dolomites depart from near the station).

Budget: €65–110/night

Small hotels and B&Bs in the historic centre and the surrounding streets. Trento has a university and a strong local hotel market — quality at moderate prices is consistent.

B&B Al Cavour (Via Cavour area) — small guesthouse, central position, good value. €70–100/night.

Hotel America (Via Torre Verde 50) — central three-star, walking distance to the Duomo, consistently well-reviewed. €90–150/night.

Hotel Aquila D’Oro (Piazza Lodron 26) — three-star in the historic centre, family-run, good breakfast. €95–160/night.

Mid-range: €110–190/night

Boutique hotels in historic buildings, some with views of the castello or the surrounding Alpine peaks. Several excellent options in the historic centre at this price point.

Grand Hotel Trento (Via Alfieri 1) — the main four-star hotel in the city, central, conference facilities, reliable quality. €140–220/night.

High-end: €190–320/night

A handful of refined four-star hotels. Some have rooftop bars with mountain views. The Christmas market period (November–January) pushes prices higher across all categories — book well ahead.

Hotel Villa Madruzzo (Via Ponte Alto 26, outside the centre) — converted 19th-century villa in the hills above the city, pool, free shuttle to centre, the best upscale option near Trento. €160–280/night.

Practical Notes

  • Trento is on the Verona–Bolzano–Innsbruck train line; easy connections in both directions
  • Bolzano is 30 minutes north; Verona is 50 minutes south; Venice is 1.5 hours
  • Dolomite day trips: buses to Canazei (Fassa valley) and Vigo di Fassa run from the bus station; the Paganella ski area is 20 minutes by bus
  • Christmas market (November–January) is among the best in Italy; the city fills significantly — book 2–3 months ahead
  • Lago di Garda is 40 minutes by car from Trento’s southern edge

Seasonal notes

The Christmas markets (late November to early January) are Trento’s busiest period — book at least a month ahead. A pre-booked airport transfer to Trento from Verona airport (the closest international airport, approximately 1 hour away) is the most direct way to arrive with luggage. Summer brings hikers using Trento as a Dolomite gateway, with steady demand from June to September. Spring and autumn are the quietest and cheapest periods, with hotel prices approximately 20-30% below peak. The train from Verona takes approximately 1 hour (from approximately €8), and from Bolzano approximately 40 minutes (from approximately €4), making Trento easy to reach from either direction.
