Siena is among the most complete medieval cities in Europe. Where Florence was rebuilt and expanded through subsequent centuries, Siena’s centre has remained largely unchanged since the 14th century — a product partly of plague (the Black Death of 1348 killed roughly half the city’s population and ended its expansion), partly of Florentine domination after 1555, which froze development. The result is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the street plan, the Gothic architecture, and the civic institutions of a medieval Italian commune in extraordinary completeness.
The city is organised into 17 contrade (wards), each with its own church, museum, heraldic symbol, and fierce local identity. The Palio di Siena — the bareback horse race held in Piazza del Campo twice a year (2 July and 16 August) — is not a performance for tourists but the central event of Sienese civic life, contested with genuine intensity between contrade whose rivalry dates back centuries.
We have mapped 8 top-rated tours by traveller type: walking tours with Cathedral access, Palio-focused experiences, day trips from Florence, and Chianti wine excursions.

For First-Time Visitors
Siena: Guided City Tour with Cathedral Skip-the-Line Entry
Duration: 2 hours | From: approximately €18 per person | Includes: licensed guide, priority entry to the Cathedral
The essential Siena introduction. The tour covers Piazza del Campo — the shell-shaped medieval square considered one of the finest public spaces in Europe, tilted slightly toward the civic buildings on its lower edge to channel rainwater into the central drain — and the Palazzo Pubblico (the Gothic civic palace begun in 1297, which still houses the city government). The guide explains the contrade system, the Torre del Mangia (the 102-metre tower whose height was stipulated by law to equal that of the Cathedral tower, maintaining the symbolic balance between civic and religious authority), and the Palio.
Inside the Cathedral (Duomo di Siena), the guide covers the extraordinary striped marble interior — black and white bands of marble that give the cathedral its distinctive appearance inside and out — and the pulpit by Nicola Pisano (1265–1268), which predates but clearly influenced his son Giovanni’s work in Pisa. The floor, composed of 56 marble panels of inlaid and graffito work created between 1369 and 1547 by various artists, is partially covered for preservation but visible in sections.

Siena: Walking Tour and Skip-the-Line Duomo Tickets
Duration: 2 hours | From: approximately €25 per person | Includes: licensed guide, priority Cathedral entry, small group
A structured walking tour of Siena’s historic centre with pre-booked Cathedral access. The route takes in the main medieval streets — the Via di Città, Banchi di Sopra, and Banchi di Sotto, which converge on Piazza del Campo — as well as the Cathedral complex. The guide explains why Siena’s medieval street network radiates from the piazza rather than following a Roman grid, and how the contrade boundaries map onto the street plan in ways that remain visible today in the colours of kerb-painted flags and the positioning of contrada fountains.
The Cathedral complex in Siena is more extensive than most visitors realise: in addition to the Duomo itself, the Baptistery (below street level, with remarkable 15th-century frescoes by Vecchietta), the Piccolomini Library (with its brilliant Pinturicchio frescoes), and the Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana (which holds the original Duccio Maestà altarpiece, removed from the Cathedral in 1771) are all part of the same complex.

For Culture and Palio Lovers
Siena: Walking Tour with Duomo or Contrade Museum Visit
Duration: 2 hours | From: approximately €22 per person | Includes: guide, choice of Cathedral or Contrada Museum visit
The most distinctive option for visitors interested in the Palio beyond its surface spectacle. The guide covers the race itself — its origins in the 13th century, the current format (10 horses representing 10 of the 17 contrade, selected by lot), the role of the fantino (jockey), and what it means within Sienese civic culture. A Contrada Museum visit shows the elaborate embroidered banners, historical costumes, and trophy collections that each contrada maintains — the depth of investment in these institutions reflects the central importance of the Palio to Sienese identity.
For visitors arriving outside the Palio race dates, the museum visit provides the historical and cultural context that makes the event comprehensible rather than merely spectacular.

For Luxury and Private Tours
Siena: 3-Hour Private City Walking Tour
Duration: 3 hours | From: approximately €45 per person | Includes: private guide, Cathedral complex entry, flexible itinerary
A private tour of Siena’s historic centre with a guide who can tailor the experience to your interests. For art history travellers, the focus might be the progression from Duccio’s Maestà (1308–1311, the revolutionary Byzantine-influenced altarpiece in the Museo dell’Opera) through Simone Martini’s Maestà in the Palazzo Pubblico (1315, the secular counterpart) and Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good and Bad Government frescoes (1338–1339, the most significant secular fresco cycle of the medieval period in Italy, depicting an idealised Siena in extraordinary contemporary detail).
For visitors interested in urban history and civic governance, the focus can be on the Palazzo Pubblico’s role as a functioning civic building for seven centuries, the contrade system’s evolution, and the economic history of Siena as a banking centre (the Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded 1472, is the world’s oldest continuously operating bank).

For Wine and Food Lovers
Siena: Guided Walking Tour with Lunch and Chianti Wine
Duration: 4 hours | From: approximately €65 per person | Includes: city guide, Chianti wine tasting, traditional Tuscan lunch
Siena sits at the southern edge of the Chianti Classico DOCG zone — the area between Florence and Siena that produces some of Italy’s most celebrated Sangiovese-based wines. This tour combines a guided walk through the historic centre with a tasting of local Chianti wines accompanied by traditional Sienese products: pici pasta (hand-rolled thick pasta native to Siena province), ribollita (a thick vegetable bread soup), crostini neri (chicken liver paste on toast — a Sienese staple), and panforte (the dense spiced fruit and nut cake that originated here in the 13th century).
The combination of cultural tour and food experience is the most efficient way to cover both dimensions of a visit to Siena in a single half-day.

Florence: Siena, San Gimignano and Chianti Small Group Tour
Duration: Full day | From: approximately €55 per person | Includes: transport from Florence, guide at both cities, Chianti wine tasting, lunch
The most popular full-day excursion from Florence into southern Tuscany: Siena, San Gimignano, and the Chianti Classico wine region together. San Gimignano, 40 km north of Siena, is a small walled hill town famous for its 14 surviving medieval towers (73 were built; most were demolished over subsequent centuries). The town’s Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Italy’s oldest DOCG white wine.
The day typically includes a guided walk in Siena (Piazza del Campo and Cathedral), a stop at a Chianti estate for wine and olive oil tasting with lunch, and time in San Gimignano. The combination gives a representative cross-section of the Sienese hill town landscape without the complexity of self-driving.

Practical Information
Cathedral entry (as of 2026): The Siena Cathedral entry costs approximately €5–8 (standard ticket). A combined ticket covering the Duomo, Baptistery, Piccolomini Library, and Museo dell’Opera costs approximately €15. The Piccolomini Library (Pinturicchio’s 10-fresco cycle depicting the life of Pope Pius II, commissioned in 1502) is included in the combined ticket and is worth the additional cost.
Palio dates: 2 July and 16 August each year. Tickets for the grandstands around Piazza del Campo sell out years in advance. The central piazza is free to stand in, but the crowd density on race day is extreme. Attending the trial heats (prove) in the preceding days is a viable alternative.
Getting to Siena from Florence: SITA buses from Florence Autostazione to Siena Piazza Gramsci run regularly (approximately every 30 minutes in peak season, 75 minutes journey time, approximately €9 round trip in 2026). Direct trains from Florence require a change and take longer. Self-driving allows stops in Chianti but requires parking outside the historic ZTL zone.
Terrain: Siena’s historic centre is built on three hills. The streets between the main piazza and the Cathedral are steep in places and entirely pedestrianised. Comfortable, flat-soled shoes are advisable.
Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable conditions. The Palio periods in July and August bring extreme crowds to the piazza but also represent the city at its most authentically itself.
