The Merano WineFestival is one of Italyโ€™s most distinctive wine events: a four-day gathering in the thermal spa town of Merano in South Tyrol, set against the backdrop of the Alps in early November. The 2026 edition is expected to run in the first full week of November at the Kurhaus, Meranoโ€™s grand belle-epoque congress venue.

Exact dates for 2026 have not been confirmed at time of writing. The festival has historically run from Thursday to Sunday in the week containing 6-10 November. Check the official site at meranowinefestival.com for confirmed dates and registration opening.

What the Festival Is

Merano WineFestival is a trade and consumer event focused on quality. Entry is not by the glass but by the wristband, with different ticket tiers allowing access to various halls and sessions. Producers are invited through a selection process rather than simply applying, which keeps the level of wines consistently high.

The main venue is the Kurhaus, a neo-baroque congress hall at the centre of the old spa district. Additional tasting rooms spread through the surrounding gardens and nearby buildings. In 2025, the festival hosted producers from over 20 countries, though Italian producers from South Tyrol, Tuscany, Piedmont, and the Veneto make up the core of the exhibitor list.

A parallel organic and biodynamic section, BioVino, runs alongside the main event. This section has grown noticeably over recent years as natural wine producers have expanded their presence in northern Italy.

Tickets and Registration

Consumer tickets (as opposed to trade press passes) are sold in advance online. Day tickets for the main hall typically sell out within days of going on sale. The festival also offers evening gala tastings, which attract smaller crowds and focus on library vintages and special selections.

Past ticket prices have ranged from approximately โ‚ฌ80 for a single-day general access pass to โ‚ฌ150 or more for premium evening events. Check the official website for 2026 pricing, which is usually announced six to eight weeks before the event.

Groups of four or more receive a modest discount and can book as a party through the organiserโ€™s group registration portal.

What to Expect on the Day

Arrival before the doors open is recommended; the first hour tends to see shorter queues at the producer tables than later in the afternoon. Come with a plan or at minimum a list of regions you want to focus on. The Kurhaus has multiple halls and without some direction it is easy to spend the morning on Champagne and German Riesling and run out of time for the South Tyrolean producers.

Water and bread are available throughout. The organisers actively encourage spitting, with stations at each tasting table. Pace matters over four hours of tasting.

Getting to Merano

Merano sits in the Passeier valley, around 30 kilometres northwest of Bolzano. The two cities are connected by a regular train service (the Vinschgau railway) with journeys of around 40 minutes. Bolzano is served by frequent trains from Verona, Trento, and Innsbruck.

Driving from Milan takes approximately two and a half hours via the A22 Brenner motorway. Parking in central Merano is metered; the festival organiser typically designates overflow parking areas on the outskirts of the town for festival days.

From Bolzano airport, car hire is the most direct option if arriving by air, though the Bolzano-Merano train is straightforward once at the station. Innsbruck airport in Austria is an alternative for northern European arrivals, with a hire car taking around one hour to reach Merano via the Brenner pass.

Where to Stay in Merano

Merano has a wide selection of spa hotels and smaller boutique properties in the old town. Booking for November should be done well in advance of the festival announcement, as accommodation fills quickly once dates are confirmed. The thermal spa district around the Kurhaus itself has the highest concentration of hotels within walking distance of the venue.

Bolzano is a practical alternative base with more mid-range accommodation options, and the train between the two cities runs frequently throughout the day.
