European Sleeper has confirmed 9 September 2026 as the launch date for its Brussels–Milan night train, giving travellers a new overnight option between Belgium and Milan without needing to fly.

The service departs Brussels three times a week — on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings — and arrives in Milan Central the following morning. Stops along the route include Cologne (Germany), Bern, Brig, Domodossola, and Stresa on the shores of Lago Maggiore, making it one of the most scenic overnight itineraries in Europe.

Return Schedule and Fares

The return Milan–Brussels service runs on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights. One-way fares start at €49.99 per person in a couchette berth, with private sleeping compartments available at higher prices. Tickets went on sale on 17 March 2026 via the European Sleeper website (europeansleeper.eu), and the cheapest berths have been selling out quickly on high-demand dates.

What Happened to the Amsterdam Extension

European Sleeper had originally planned a combined Amsterdam/Brussels–Milan service, with trains joining in Cologne before heading south. The operator has now pushed the Amsterdam leg to 2027, meaning September 2026 departures operate Brussels–Milan only. Travellers from the Netherlands can connect via Brussels or Cologne.

Why This Matters for Italy Visitors

For anyone visiting northern Italy in autumn — particularly those planning to base themselves in Milan and explore the lakes, Dolomites, or Tuscany by rail — the overnight service removes a short-haul flight from the itinerary entirely. Departing in the evening and waking up in Milan means no airport queues and no wasted daytime travel hours. For a practical look at getting around Italy by train once you arrive, including Trenitalia and Italo routes, our guide covers all the main options.
