Sorrento works well as a base for the entire Amalfi Coast region precisely because it is connected to everything: ferries to Positano, Amalfi, and Capri, trains to Naples and Pompeii, buses along the coast road. This transport utility, combined with a wider choice of accommodation than the smaller coast villages, makes it the most practical overnight option for most itineraries.

The Areas
The old town (centro storico) stretches between Piazza Tasso and the clifftop, bounded by the medieval walls. Most streets are pedestrianised, hotels here range from budget B&Bs in converted palazzi to mid-range properties, and everything is walkable. The most convenient area for most visitors.
The clifftop (Via Capo and east) contains Sorrento’s most spectacular properties - hotels perched on the cliff edge with elevators or lifts descending to the sea. Further from the main piazza but the right choice for anyone prioritising the view and pool access.
Marina Grande is the old fishing quarter below the cliff - significantly cheaper than the town above, with a handful of small guesthouses and B&Bs. The staircase to the town is 200 steps. Quiet, local, and good value, but inconvenient if you are catching early ferries (which leave from Marina Piccola on the other side of the headland).
Budget Options (approximately €80–160/night)
Casa Astarita B&B, Corso Italia 67. A B&B in the centre of the old town, in a restored 18th-century palazzo above the main shopping street. Rooms are simply furnished but spacious; breakfast is good. Approximately €90–140 as of 2026 in shoulder season. No pool, but the location and the genuine warmth of the owners make it one of the better budget choices in the city. Book months ahead for June–August.
Hotel Savoia, Via Fuorimura 48. A classic three-star in the old town lanes, family-run for several generations. Clean rooms, reliable breakfast, helpful staff, and prices significantly below the clifftop competition (approximately €85–130 as of 2026). No sea view from rooms, but walking distance to everything.
Mid-Range Hotels (approximately €160–320/night)
Hotel Antiche Mura, Via Fuorimura 7. Built into the old town walls with a small but pretty pool terrace and rooms that retain the original stone and plaster. The setting is unusual - genuinely historic without being uncomfortable. Rates approximately €180–260 in shoulder season, higher in August as of 2026. Good restaurant. A few minutes’ walk from Piazza Tasso.
Hotel Gardenia, Via Fuorimura 61. A mid-sized hotel in the centre with a rooftop terrace giving panoramic views across the rooftops toward the bay. Comfortable, well-managed, and consistently well reviewed. Rates approximately €160–240 as of 2026. The rooftop position makes evening drinks here particularly pleasant.
Hotel la Minervetta, Via Capo 25. A design hotel on the clifftop, in a converted art deco villa, with a terrace and pool looking directly toward Mount Vesuvius across the bay. The interiors are carefully done - tiles, vintage ceramics, a considered calm. Rates approximately €220–320 as of 2026. Breakfast on the terrace with the Vesuvius view is one of the better Sorrento experiences.
Luxury Hotels (approximately €320–700+/night)
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, Piazza Tasso 34. Sorrento’s most famous hotel, in a clifftop garden overlooking the bay since 1834. The property includes a private lift to the sea, two restaurants, a pool, and rooms ranging from standard (very comfortable) to suites with private terraces and Vesuvius views. Rates from approximately €350–400 in shoulder season, from approximately €550 in July–August as of 2026. The garden, the historic public rooms, and the position at the top of the cliff make this the definitive Sorrento grand hotel.
Grand Hotel Capodimonte, Via Capo 14. A large clifftop hotel with direct sea access, a pool, and rooms and suites at various price points. Less historic than the Excelsior Vittoria but very well run. Rates approximately €280–450 as of 2026. Particularly good for families given the sea access and pool.
Relais Villa Antiche Mura, Vico I Fuorimura. A boutique property within the old town walls with a small number of rooms and suites, a garden, and a genuinely intimate atmosphere. Rates approximately €320–500 as of 2026.
Booking Notes
Sorrento’s most popular hotels book out for July and August 5–6 months ahead. May, June, September, and October offer the best combination of availability and price - and the weather in September/October is excellent (sea temperature remains warm into late October). Most hotels offer free cancellation up to 48–72 hours before arrival if booked directly. Breakfast is typically included at mid-range and luxury properties; B&Bs charge it separately or include it in the rate - check when booking.
