What the numbers mean
All prices are in euros, approximate, as of 2026. Italy varies a lot by city and season, so treat these as ranges rather than quotes.
- Accommodation: Nightly rates are per room, so couples sharing halve the per-person cost. Hostel dorms start at approximately โฌ18-35 in Naples, Rome and Florence. Venice and peak-season Amalfi Coast cost noticeably more than the south and Sicily. Add a city tax of approximately โฌ1-7 per person per night.
- Food: Coffee at the bar counter is approximately โฌ1-1.50, a trattoria lunch approximately โฌ10-20, and dinner with wine approximately โฌ25-50 per person. Expect a cover charge (coperto) of approximately โฌ1-4.
- Activities: The Colosseum is approximately โฌ16-22, the Uffizi approximately โฌ25 and Pompeii approximately โฌ18. Guided tours and day trips run approximately โฌ35-90. Many churches and piazzas are free.
- Transport: Regional trains are cheap (approximately โฌ5-15 per trip), while Frecciarossa high-speed fares booked ahead run approximately โฌ15-40 between major cities. City metro and bus tickets are approximately โฌ1.30-2.20. A rental car adds approximately โฌ25-60/day plus fuel, tolls and parking.
- Flights: Not included - budget separately. Prices vary widely by season and departure city, so check current fares before you commit.
