Trenitalia and the Italian rail network operator RFI have confirmed significant engineering works across several major intercity lines in August 2026. Travellers with train journeys between Florence and Rome, Milan and Venice, or Milan and Genoa should review their bookings and allow for extended journey times or alternative routing in the weeks ahead.
Florence–Rome: Chiusi Sud to Orvieto Nord (10–28 August)
The high-speed line between Florence and Rome is subject to a complete track suspension between Chiusi Sud and Orvieto Nord from 10 August to 28 August. This section covers roughly the midpoint of the Florence–Rome route and affects Frecciarossa and Italo services on the main direttissima corridor.
During the closure, trains are expected to be rerouted via the slower coastal or inland lines, adding approximately 45–75 minutes to journey times depending on service. Trenitalia has indicated a reduced frequency of direct services and is recommending passengers consider bus substitution for some timeslots.
If you have tickets for the Florence–Rome corridor between 10 and 28 August, check your booking via the Trenitalia app or website for updated travel information. Tickets are rebookable onto alternative services without fee during engineering periods.
Milan–Venice: Disruptions through 16 August
The Milan–Venice main line is subject to engineering works affecting portions of the route through 16 August, with reduced service frequency and some journey time extensions. The works primarily affect the section between Milan Centrale and Brescia, where track upgrades are under way.
Travellers on this corridor should allow an additional 30–45 minutes and verify whether their specific train is running as booked. Italo services are less affected than Trenitalia on this route, and checking both operators may yield better options.
Milan–Genoa: Pavia–Voghera Closure (until 28 August)
The Milan–Genoa line has a section closure between Pavia and Voghera in place until 28 August. This affects intercity services between Milan and Genoa and requires either bus substitution or rerouteing via Alessandria. Journey times are extended by approximately 40–60 minutes for affected services.
Travellers heading to the Ligurian coast (Genoa, Cinque Terre, La Spezia) from Milan should check alternative options — some services from Milan Rogoredo offer different routing that may be less disrupted.
What Travellers Should Do
- Check bookings now: Log into Trenitalia or Italo with your booking reference. Both platforms show disruption alerts on affected reservations.
- Book flexible tickets if possible: Interrail and Eurail pass holders should verify seat reservation requirements on rerouted services.
- Consider timing: Departures before 08:00 or after 20:00 are typically less affected by engineering windows.
- Plan buffer time: Add at least 60 minutes to your journey plan for any affected route during August.

Engineering works of this scale are standard in August when the network sees reduced commuter traffic — routes typically emerge improved for autumn, but August requires more careful planning.
