Italy is facing a nationwide maritime sector strike today, 10 June 2026, with port workers across the country walking out for a full 24 hours from midnight to midnight local time. Confirmed by Dolcevia.com’s live travel alert calendar and strike monitoring service StrikeTracker, the action covers maritime sector workers at ports nationwide.

A parallel 12-hour action is also under way specifically at the Port of Ravenna, running from 10:00 to 22:00 today, targeting tugboat operations carried out by SERS. Both actions were registered in Italy’s mandatory advance-notice dispute system, meaning they are legally confirmed and not subject to last-minute cancellation.

Who is affected

The strike primarily affects passenger ferry services that rely on port handling and dockworker crews. Travellers planning to cross to Sicily, Sardinia, the Aeolian Islands, Capri, Elba, or any other island destination today should contact their ferry operator directly to confirm whether their sailing is running. Major routes departing from Naples, Palermo, Genoa, Civitavecchia, Livorno, and Ancona may experience delays or cancellations while the stoppage remains in effect.

Cargo operations are also affected, which can cause knock-on congestion at busy terminals even after the strike ends tonight.

Your rights if your ferry is cancelled

Under EU passenger rights rules (Regulation EC 1177/2010), ferry passengers are entitled to a choice between a full refund or alternative transport if a sailing is cancelled. If the wait before departure exceeds 90 minutes, operators must also provide meals, refreshments, and where necessary overnight accommodation. See our guide to Italy passenger rights and travel disruption compensation for full details.

Tomorrow: national rail strike

Disruption continues into tomorrow. A nationwide rail strike affecting FS Group crews — including Trenitalia, Italo, and Trenord — is scheduled for 11 June 2026 between 09:01 and 17:00. Regional services will operate normally during protected windows of 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00. Our guide to Italy transport strikes has the full June and July calendar.

Planning your journey today

We recommend calling your ferry operator early this morning to verify your sailing before heading to the port. If your itinerary depends on reaching an island and your crossing is cancelled, consider delaying travel by 48 hours to clear both today’s maritime action and tomorrow’s rail stoppage.
