Elba sits roughly 10 kilometres off the Tuscan coast, separated from the mainland by the Piombino Channel. The crossing is short, but the logistics of getting there — particularly with a car in summer — require some planning. Here is the complete picture.
The Ferry from Piombino
The only practical gateway to Elba for most visitors is the port of Piombino, specifically the ferry terminal at Piombino Marittima — not to be confused with the main town centre of Piombino, which is 2 km away and has no ferry services. The ferry terminal is well signposted and has a ticket office, a small café, and car lanes.
Three main operators run the Piombino–Portoferraio route:
- Toremar — the historic Elba ferry, now part of the Corsica Sardinia Ferries group. Runs standard car ferries throughout the year.
- Moby Lines — the largest operator, with the most frequent departures in summer and a reliable modern fleet.
- Corsica Ferries — offers seasonal services, sometimes including faster catamaran options.
Journey time: Approximately 70 minutes on the standard car ferry. Some seasonal hydrofoil services do the crossing in 30–35 minutes but carry foot passengers only and have reduced luggage capacity.
Prices (approximately, as of 2026):
- Foot passenger: approximately €15–18 one way
- Bicycle: approximately €5–8 additional
- Car up to 4m + 1 driver: approximately €40–55 one way (low season) to €65–90 (peak August)
- Car plus 2 passengers: approximately €50–70 in mid-season; higher in August
Prices vary significantly by operator, departure time, and how far ahead you book. We recommend using the booking aggregator Traghetti.it or Directferries.co.uk to compare live prices across all operators.
Book well ahead: In July and August, car crossings on Friday evening, Saturday morning, and Sunday evening sell out weeks in advance. Even foot passenger tickets should be booked at least a few days ahead during peak season. April through June and September are much easier — often available online the same week.
Getting to Piombino Marittima
By Train
The most practical option if you are travelling without a car. The route from Florence (Santa Maria Novella) involves one change:
- Take a Trenitalia regional train from Florence to Campiglia Marittima — journey time approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes; tickets from approximately €12 as of 2026.
- Change at Campiglia Marittima onto the local shuttle service to Piombino Marittima — approximately 20 minutes, runs timed to meet ferries in season.
From Rome Termini, take a train to Campiglia Marittima via Grosseto or Pisa — approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the service. Always check Trenitalia or Italo schedules rather than relying on cached timetables, which change seasonally.
Important: Buy a train ticket to Piombino Marittima station, not Piombino Centrale. The Marittima branch line goes directly to the ferry terminal; Piombino Centrale requires a taxi or bus to reach the port.
By Car
Driving to Piombino from:
- Florence: Approximately 2 hours via the A1 autostrada south to Incisa, then the FI-PI-LI expressway and SP 23 coast road, or via the SS 68 through Volterra (more scenic, slower).
- Rome: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes via the A1 north to Orvieto then the Via Aurelia (SS 1) along the Tyrrhenian coast.
- Pisa: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes via the SS 206 toward Cecina then south.
Leave the A12 or A1 at signs for Piombino/Porto and follow signs for Piombino Marittima specifically. The terminal has large car parks (approximately €10–15/day as of 2026) if you prefer to leave the car on the mainland and travel as a foot passenger — this saves significantly on the crossing cost and makes life simpler on Elba, where you can hire a car from the port on arrival.
By Coach
Flixbus operates seasonal services to Piombino from Florence and other Tuscan cities. Journey time from Florence is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. Check the Flixbus website for seasonal availability.
Arriving in Portoferraio
Portoferraio is Elba’s capital and largest port — the ferry terminal is central and walkable to the old town, beaches, and car hire agencies. From the moment you step off the ferry you will see the Medici fortifications rising above the harbour.
Car hire at the port: Several agencies have desks at or immediately adjacent to the Portoferraio ferry terminal, including Avis, Europcar, and local operators. We strongly recommend pre-booking in summer — cars sell out faster than ferry spaces. Rates start at approximately €50–70/day for a small car as of 2026.
Alternative Arrival: Elba Airport (OEB)
Elba has a small regional airport at Marina di Campo on the south coast (IATA code: OEB). Seasonal scheduled flights operate from:
- Rome Fiumicino (FCO): Operated by Silver Air and occasionally by Sky Alps — journey approximately 50 minutes. Frequencies are typically a few times per week rather than daily.
- Milan Linate (LIN): Seasonal service, summer months only.
- Other Italian cities and European charter routes: Vary by year and operator.
The airport is not large — it has one terminal — and services are explicitly seasonal, running roughly from April through October. Outside summer, the airport sees minimal scheduled traffic. Check Silver Air and direct booking sites rather than generic aggregators, which sometimes carry stale route data. Flying makes sense if you are coming from Rome or Milan and want to skip the train-ferry combination, but for most visitors the ferry from Piombino remains simpler and more reliable.
When to Travel
Best crossing conditions: Mornings are generally calmer than afternoons in summer; the Piombino Channel can get choppy in strong south-westerly winds, particularly on the shorter catamaran services. Full car ferries are more stable.
Avoid: Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings in July and August — these are the peak change-over slots and the ferry queues in Piombino can stretch back a kilometre from the terminal. If you have flexibility, crossing on a Tuesday or Wednesday in these months is a very different experience.
Best months overall: Late May to mid-June and the whole of September. The sea is warm enough for comfortable swimming from early June, temperatures are in the high 20s Celsius, and ferry crossings are straightforward to book at reasonable prices. October is mild and beautiful but some beach facilities close.

- Pre-book a hire car at Portoferraio port if you need one — island roads require it
- For foot passengers, the combined train-ferry is often faster door-to-door than flying via Rome
