Venice Marco Polo airport (VCE) sits on the mainland beside the lagoon, roughly 12km north of Venice’s historic islands. Getting into Venice means crossing the lagoon — either by water or by road to the causeway at Piazzale Roma, then continuing on foot, by vaporetto (water bus), or by private water taxi. There is no conventional train or taxi that takes you door-to-door across the water.

Alilaguna: Public Water Bus

Alilaguna operates public boat lines connecting the airport to various points in Venice. The main options:

Line Blu (Blue Line): Murano → Fondamente Nove → Ospedale → Lido. Useful if you are staying in Cannaregio or near the Fondamente Nove.

Line Arancio (Orange Line): Grand Canal route, stopping at Ferrovia (near Santa Lucia train station), Rialto, San Marco, and Giardini. This is the most useful line for most visitors.

Line Rossa (Red Line): Murano → San Zaccaria → Giudecca → Zattere → Piazzale Roma. Slower but useful for hotels near the Zattere and Giudecca.

Cost: approximately €15 per person one way as of 2026 (online); slightly more at the airport kiosk.

Journey time: 60–90 minutes depending on the line and destination. The Arancio line to San Marco takes about 80 minutes.

Frequency: roughly every 30 minutes on most lines, with gaps late at night.

Alilaguna is the most economical way into Venice from the airport. Book tickets at the Alilaguna desk in the arrivals hall or at the dock. The boats carry luggage reasonably well but the lower decks get crowded in peak season.

Private Water Taxi (Motoscafo)

A private water taxi takes you directly from the airport dock to the water entrance closest to your hotel — no stopping, no shared cabin.

Cost: approximately €120–€160 for up to 4 passengers as of 2026. Additional passengers may incur a supplement. Prices rise for night-time, Sunday, and public holiday departures.

Journey time: 25–35 minutes directly to your destination.

Where to book: the Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia desk is in the arrivals hall. Or book in advance through Kiwitaxi or GetTransfer for a confirmed price.

The water taxi is the most luxurious and fastest option, and the only way to arrive directly at your hotel’s front door (if it has a canal entrance). Worth it for groups of 3–4 splitting the cost, or for travellers with heavy luggage who do not want to navigate Alilaguna with bags.

Bus to Piazzale Roma

ATVO and ACTV operate bus services between the airport and Piazzale Roma — the terminal point for road vehicles on the edge of the historic centre.

Cost: approximately €8–€10 per person as of 2026 (ATVO Express). ACTV local bus line 5 is cheaper but slower.

Journey time: 20–25 minutes to Piazzale Roma. From there, you continue on foot, by vaporetto, or by water taxi to your accommodation.

Frequency: roughly every 30 minutes during daytime, less frequent at night.

Once at Piazzale Roma:

  • Most hotels in Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, and San Polo are 10–20 minutes on foot with luggage.
  • Vaporetto line 1 runs along the Grand Canal to Rialto and San Marco — approximately 30–40 minutes, €9.50 per person as of 2026.
  • Piazzale Roma also has a people-mover monorail to Tronchetto car park, for those arriving by car.

With luggage: the bus is cheap and frequent, but dragging suitcases through Venice’s narrow calli (lanes) and across bridges can be exhausting. Consider your hotel’s location carefully — if it requires more than 10 minutes of walking from a vaporetto stop or Piazzale Roma, the water taxi’s door-to-door service becomes a more serious consideration.

Private Road Transfer to Piazzale Roma

You can pre-book a private road transfer from the airport to Piazzale Roma with a driver meeting you at arrivals.

Cost: approximately €30–€50 for a private transfer to Piazzale Roma as of 2026. Book via Kiwitaxi or GetTransfer.

Journey time: 20–25 minutes to Piazzale Roma, then onwards by foot or vaporetto.

This option is a middle ground — more comfortable than the bus, cheaper than the water taxi, but you still have to navigate Venice on foot or by boat from Piazzale Roma. Good for groups with luggage who are staying near Piazzale Roma or the station.

Late-Night and Early-Morning Arrivals

Alilaguna: The last boats depart the airport around midnight. Check current timetables at alilaguna.it before relying on this.

Private water taxi: Available 24/7 but at premium rates after midnight. A night fare from the airport to San Marco can reach €180–€200. Pre-booking is strongly recommended for late-night arrivals.

Bus: ATVO runs reduced services after midnight; check timetables. A taxi on land to Piazzale Roma is an alternative, though less economical.

Recommendation for late-night arrivals: book a private water taxi or road transfer in advance via Kiwitaxi. Venice at midnight with luggage and no boat booked is a situation worth avoiding.

Getting to Key Tourist Areas

San Marco / Rialto: Alilaguna Arancio line or vaporetto 1 from Piazzale Roma. Private water taxi is direct.

Cannaregio (near Fondamente Nove): Alilaguna Blu line is the most direct option.

Dorsoduro / Zattere: Alilaguna Rossa line or bus to Piazzale Roma then walk. A water taxi is direct if your hotel has a canal entrance.

Giudecca: Alilaguna Rossa line stops at Giudecca before Piazzale Roma (check the direction).

Murano: Alilaguna Blu or Arancio lines both stop at Murano — useful if you are staying on the island.

Luggage Storage

Piazzale Roma has staffed luggage storage facilities — convenient if you arrive before check-in. Venice Santa Lucia train station (5 minutes by people-mover or vaporetto from Piazzale Roma) also has Kipoint left-luggage lockers.

Given Venice’s heavy bridges and cobbled paths, depositing bags before exploring is highly recommended if you have time before check-in. Most hotels will also store luggage after check-out with no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Venice airport to the city?
You have four main options: the Alilaguna water bus (public boat service), a private water taxi, a land bus to Piazzale Roma (then vaporetto or walk), or a private road transfer to Piazzale Roma. There is no direct train to Venice's historic centre.
How long does it take to get from Marco Polo airport to Venice?
The Alilaguna boat takes 75–90 minutes to San Marco or around 60 minutes to Rialto. A private water taxi takes 25–35 minutes directly to your hotel's nearest water entrance. The bus to Piazzale Roma takes 20–25 minutes, then allow 20–40 minutes onward by vaporetto.
Can I take a private taxi to my hotel door in Venice?
Not by road — Venice has no roads into the historic centre. Private water taxis (motoscafi) can deliver you to the water entrance nearest your hotel. Road transfers drop at Piazzale Roma, the gateway between the road network and the pedestrian/water city.
