Polignano a Mare is one of the most photogenic towns on the Adriatic coast โ a compact medieval centre built right to the edge of limestone cliffs that fall sharply into clear blue-green sea. At 33km from Bari, it works well as a day trip, but the beaches, cave visits, and cliff walks justify a slower pace if you have the time.
The Old Town on the Cliffs
The centro storico of Polignano sits on a limestone promontory above the Adriatic โ the streets are narrow, the buildings white, and every few turns reveals a view down vertiginous cliff faces to the sea below. It is small (the historic centre can be walked in 30 minutes) but very dense visually.
Entry: walk in through the Arco Marchesale โ the main gate of the medieval walls, on Via Martiri di Dogali. From there, follow Via Castellano (the main spine of the old town) toward the coast.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II: the main square, with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (14th-century Gothic, free entry, open 08:00โ12:00 and 16:00โ19:30 approximately). The square has cafes and is the social centre of the town; busy in the evenings.
The cliff terraces: several balcony points on the seaward edge of the old town look down to the sea and to Lama Monachile beach below. The best is the free public terrace off Vico Ospedale โ follow the signs for โbelvedereโ from the main square. The view down to the beach and through the sea arch is the classic Polignano shot.
Lama Monachile Beach
The main beach of Polignano โ a small sandy beach set at the foot of a ravine (lama means a natural gorge carved by seasonal streams) between two cliff faces, reached through a natural sea arch. The beach is approximately 100m long and 30m wide. In July and August it becomes very crowded by 10:00.
Access: walk down from the old town (signposted; about 5 minutes) via Via Mulino. Free access; no reservations needed. Sun loungers and umbrellas hire from approximately โฌ10โ15/pair/day as of 2026 on the paid section; free spaces exist at the far ends.
Swimming: the water is clear and shallow near the beach, deepening quickly toward the arch and the open sea. Snorkelling is good around the cliff bases.
Photography: the view back through the sea arch to the beach with the cliff-top buildings above is one of the most-photographed spots in Puglia. Best light is morning (east-facing beach).
Cliff Swimming and Platforms
Beyond Lama Monachile, the cliff edges on both sides of the old town have accessible swimming spots. Steps cut into the limestone lead down to platforms at sea level where locals swim from the rocks. These are free, less crowded than the beach, and often have better water quality (clearer and deeper). Bring water shoes โ the rock is rough and uneven at the waterโs edge.
The area known as Scogliera di Polignano (accessible from Via Santo Stefano, on the southern side of the old town) has several platforms and is popular with local swimmers.
Cliff Diving
Polignano hosts the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series annually โ typically in September (check the Red Bull website for exact dates). World-class divers jump from temporary platforms built above the old town into the sea below, drawing large crowds. The event is free to watch from the cliff edges and boats; some viewing points require booking ahead.
Outside of competition season, the dive spots are used by local free divers and experienced cliff jumpers. Non-experts should not attempt the natural jump points โ the currents and rocks below are dangerous without local knowledge.
Grotta Palazzese and Sea Caves
The Grotta Palazzese is a large sea cave below the town, accessible by boat or via the hotel of the same name. It contains a restaurant (see below) and a small bar area. In summer, boat tours depart from Lama Monachile beach to visit the cave and other sea caves along the coastline.
Cave boat tours: approximately โฌ12โ20 per person for a 45โ60 minute tour of the sea caves (as of 2026). Boats depart when full from the beach area. Not bookable in advance โ just turn up. Good for the visual spectacle of entering the larger caves; audio commentary is basic.
Grotta Palazzese Restaurant: dinner in the cave costs approximately โฌ80โ120 per person as of 2026 (without wine). The setting (tables inside a natural cave lit by chandeliers, with the sea visible through the cave mouth) is theatrical. The food is decent but not at the level the price suggests. Book 2โ3 months ahead for July and August; the restaurant fills extremely quickly.
Domenico Modugno Museum and Statue
Polignano is the birthplace of Domenico Modugno, the singer who wrote and performed Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu) โ one of the most successful Italian songs internationally, winner of the 1958 Eurovision Song Contest. A bronze statue of Modugno (arms outstretched in the Volare pose) stands on Piazza San Benedetto at the cliff edge. It is one of the most photographed spots in town.
A small museum (Fondazione Modugno, Via Mulino 2) covers his life and career. Entry approximately โฌ3 as of 2026; open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 in summer. Worth 30 minutes for anyone interested in Italian popular music history.
Day Trips from Polignano
Polignano is on the coastal railway between Bari and Brindisi, which opens useful day-trip options:
- Bari โ 35 minutes north by regional train (approximately โฌ3.50 as of 2026). Pugliaโs capital with a good old town (Bari Vecchia), the Basilica of San Nicola, and the best seafood market in the region.
- Monopoli โ 15 minutes south by train (approximately โฌ2 as of 2026). A larger coastal town with a good old port and Baroque old town; less visited than Polignano.
- Alberobello โ not on the coastal railway; requires a car or bus via Fasano (approximately 45 minutes total). Worth the effort for the trulli UNESCO site.
- Ostuni โ approximately 1 hour by coastal train south then bus, or 45 minutes by car. The White City hilltop town.
Practical Notes
Getting there: regional trains from Bari Centrale (Trenitalia) run approximately every 30โ60 minutes; journey approximately 35 minutes; approximately โฌ3.50 as of 2026. By car from Bari, take the SS16 coastal road (35โ45 minutes depending on summer traffic).
Parking: very limited in the old town. Use the car parks on Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo (approximately โฌ2/hour as of 2026 in summer) and walk in through the main gate.
Best timing: arrive before 10:00 in July and August to get space at Lama Monachile. The town is significantly calmer in June and September. Evenings in the old town are pleasant year-round โ the cliff-top bars are busy from 18:00.
What to bring: good walking shoes (cobblestones and cliff steps), a towel and swimwear, and sunscreen. There are no changing facilities at the cliff swimming spots.
