Malcesine sits on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, mid-lake in the province of Verona. It is the kind of place people plan to visit for a day and end up staying longer: a well-preserved medieval centre, a Scaliger castle on the harbour, and directly above the town a cable car that climbs 1,700 metres to the Monte Baldo ridge with one of the most dramatic views in northern Italy. Lake Garda tours often use Malcesine as a starting point for the Monte Baldo ascent and a ferry circuit of the central lake.
Monte Baldo Cable Car
The cable car (Funivia Malcesine–Monte Baldo) departs from the upper part of the town (Via Navene Vecchia) and runs in two stages to the summit ridge at approximately 1,748 metres. The upper cabin is a distinctive rotating design - it completes a full 360° rotation during the ascent, meaning every passenger gets a complete panorama regardless of where they sit. On a clear day, the view encompasses the full length of Lake Garda, the Dolomite peaks to the north, and the Po Valley extending towards Venice to the south.
Return tickets cost approximately €22 per adult and approximately €13 for children aged 5–14 as of 2026. Queues form quickly in high season - arriving before 9am or after 4pm avoids the worst waits. The cable car operates year-round except for maintenance (typically two weeks in November and two in April). In winter, Monte Baldo has a small ski area accessible from the summit station.
At the top, several walking routes cross the summit ridge. The most popular is the path along the ridge northward towards Punta Telegrafo (1,950m), giving clear views down both sides. Paragliders launch regularly from the summit in good conditions - tandem paragliding flights can be booked through operators based near the cable car station.
Scaliger Castle (Castello Scaligero)
Malcesine’s Scaliger Castle sits directly above the harbour, on a rocky promontory with lake views on three sides. Like the Sirmione castle, it was built by the della Scala family (Scaligeri) of Verona during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of their control of the eastern lake shore.
The castle now houses two museums: a natural history collection focused on the Monte Baldo ecosystem, and a historical section that includes material related to Goethe’s visit in 1786. Goethe stopped in Malcesine while travelling to Rome and began sketching the castle - locals, suspecting him of being an Austrian military spy making reconnaissance drawings, briefly detained him. The episode is documented in his Italian Journey. Entry to the castle and museum costs approximately €5 as of 2026.
The castle is open daily April to October, weekends only November to March. Climbing to the tower gives a view across the harbour to the western shore and, on clear days, as far as Sirmione at the southern end.
Beaches and Watersports
Malcesine’s main beach runs north of the harbour, a mix of pebble and small-stone shore with clear water. The beach is free with some areas managed by establishments charging approximately €12–15 per person for a sunbed and umbrella as of 2026.
The town is well-known for windsurfing - the northern lake’s consistent afternoon thermal wind (the Ora) comes up reliably from the south from about 12pm, making the eastern shore between Malcesine and Torbole one of the best windsurfing locations in Europe. Surf Segnana (Via Gardesana 274) and Sailing du Lac (Viale Roma) offer equipment hire and lessons for both windsurfing and sailing. A beginner half-day course costs approximately €70 per person as of 2026.
Eating in Malcesine
Ristorante Vecchia Malcesine (Via Pisort 6) - lake fish and Veneto wine in a terrace overlooking the old town. Tasting menus from approximately €45, à la carte mains approximately €20–30. Regarded as one of the better restaurants on the eastern shore; booking essential in season.
Trattoria Al Pontile (Via Porto 16) - casual lakefront trattoria with grilled lake fish and pasta dishes. Mains approximately €12–18. Good for an informal lunch before or after the cable car.
Bar Cassone (Località Cassone, 2km south of Malcesine) - a bar-restaurant at the mouth of one of the shortest rivers in the world (the Aril, measuring 175 metres). Worth the short cycle or drive for the setting.
Getting There
By car: From Verona, take the A22 motorway northbound and exit at Affi (approximately 40 minutes). The Gardesana Orientale road (SS249) runs along the eastern shore. Parking in Malcesine is limited in summer; there are car parks at the southern and northern entrances to town.

By ferry: Malcesine has regular ferry connections. From Riva del Garda (fast ferry, approximately 30 minutes, approximately €9.60 one-way as of 2026).
