The southern shore of Lake Garda is where the lake opens out from its narrow Alpine northern section into a wider, flatter basin. The drama of the Riva del Garda cliffs is absent here - the landscape is gentler, the shores lower, and the water warmer in summer. What the south offers instead is the best transport access of any part of the lake, some of the most affordable accommodation, and two towns - Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda - that are genuinely interesting in their own right rather than just jumping-off points.

The Transport Advantage
Both Desenzano and Peschiera have stations on the Milan–Venice main line, making them the easiest points of entry to the lake from anywhere in Italy. Trains run throughout the day.
- Desenzano del Garda: 45 minutes from Milan, 30 minutes from Verona, 1h15 from Venice
- Peschiera del Garda: 50 minutes from Milan, 20 minutes from Verona, 1h00 from Venice
From either station, buses connect to Sirmione (20 minutes), and ferries depart for the northern lake from the harbours. This makes the southern lake particularly practical as a base when combining a lake visit with days in Verona, Milan, or Venice.
Desenzano del Garda
Desenzano (population approximately 27,000) is the largest town on the southern lake and has the atmosphere of a working lakeside town rather than a pure resort. The harbour (Porto Vecchio) retains a medieval tower and is lined with restaurants and bars. The Tuesday morning market extends along the lakefront and sells local produce, clothes, and household goods - one of the larger weekly markets in the province.
Villa Romana (Via Crocifisso 22) is the main cultural attraction. Excavated in the 1920s, the ruins of a large Roman villa (3rd–4th century AD) contain some of the most extensive Roman floor mosaics in northern Italy - geometric patterns, hunting scenes, and a remarkable mosaic depicting putti (cherubs) on a boat, considered exceptional for its condition and composition. Entry approximately €4 as of 2026. Open Tuesday to Sunday.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maddalena (Piazza Malvezzi) has an altarpiece by Tiepolo - The Last Supper, painted approximately 1738 - that is worth seeking out. The cathedral is usually open during the day.
Eating in Desenzano: Esplanade (Via Lario 10) is the most celebrated restaurant in the town, with a lakefront terrace and a menu focused on lake fish and regional Lombardy cuisine. Mains approximately €28–40 as of 2026; a tasting menu runs approximately €85. For more casual eating, the restaurants along Via Nazario Sauro near the old harbour offer fish and pasta at approximately €12–18 for mains.
Staying in Desenzano: Hotel Tripoli (Piazza Matteotti 18) from approximately €95/night, a solid four-star in the town centre. Park Hotel (Lungolago Cesare Battisti 19) from approximately €130/night, with lake views. Budget travellers can find B&Bs around the train station area from approximately €60/night.
Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera (population approximately 10,000) is smaller and more contained than Desenzano. The entire historic centre is enclosed within Venetian star-shaped fortifications - a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Venetian defensive works of the western Mediterranean. The walls and bastions date from the 16th century under Venetian rule and were significantly modified in the 19th century by Napoleon and later the Austrians.
Walking the perimeter of the fortifications takes approximately 45 minutes. The views from the top of the walls over the lake and the surrounding plain are interesting for the geometry: the star pattern of the bastions is clearly visible from the walkways. The town inside the walls is small - a few streets of residential and commercial life, not particularly touristy - which is part of its character.
Getting to Gardaland: Gardaland (Italy’s largest theme park) is 5km from Peschiera station, with shuttle buses running in high season. This makes Peschiera the practical base for families visiting Gardaland and the surrounding attractions. See the Lake Garda with kids guide for full details.
Eating in Peschiera: The restaurants outside the walls near the station tend towards the tourist end. Inside the walls, Al Cavallino (Piazza Benedetto Cairoli 2) is a reliable trattoria with lake fish and risotto dishes, mains approximately €14–20. Bar Centrale (Piazza Benedetto Cairoli) is the best spot for morning coffee.
Staying in Peschiera: Hotel Peschiera (Viale Resistenza 4) from approximately €90/night - clean and practical, five minutes from the station. For families, several large three-star hotels on the outskirts cater to the theme park traffic; these are not atmospheric but are functional and often include pools.
Getting Around the Southern Lake
By bus: The APAM network runs frequent buses between Desenzano, Sirmione, and Peschiera. The Desenzano–Sirmione service takes approximately 20 minutes (approximately €1.70 one-way as of 2026).
By ferry: Both Desenzano and Peschiera have ferry connections to the northern lake. The slow ferry from Desenzano to Riva del Garda takes approximately 3 hours 40 minutes with stops; the fast hydrofoil takes approximately 1 hour 50 minutes. Day passes for unlimited ferry travel across the lake are approximately €34.80 as of 2026. Full route details in the ferry guide.
By car: Sirmione is 10km from Desenzano via the SS11 road (approximately 15–20 minutes, longer in summer traffic). Renting a car opens up the western shore towards Gargnano and Limone; see our Italy car hire guide.
