Day Trips FROM Cinque Terre
The villages make a good base for exploring the surrounding Ligurian coast. The ferry and train give easy access to several destinations that are genuinely worth a half-day or full day.
Portovenere (approximately 30–50 minutes by ferry)
Portovenere is the most rewarding day trip from Cinque Terre - and the one most visitors miss because it requires the ferry rather than the train. The town sits at the southern tip of the Gulf of La Spezia on a narrow peninsula, with a medieval lower town, the striped-marble Church of San Pietro on the cliff edge, and the Castello Doria looming above. Byron swam from here to Lerici across the gulf; there is a cave named after him below the castle walls.
Getting there: Ferries run April through October from Riomaggiore (approximately 25–30 minutes, approximately €8–12 one-way as of 2026), Manarola, and Monterosso. A boat pass covering Cinque Terre and Portovenere costs approximately €30–38 per person for a day as of 2026. What to do: Walk the lower town (Via Capellini has the main strip of restaurants and old buildings), climb to the Castello Doria for views across the gulf, and walk out to the Church of San Pietro for the clifftop view south. The island of Palmaria is a 5-minute ferry ride from the harbour (approximately €2 as of 2026) with clear water swimming from the rocks. Allow 4–5 hours minimum.
Lunch: Ristorante Da Iseo (Calata Doria) does excellent mussels from the Gulf of La Spezia - approximately €35–50 per person as of 2026. Osteria del Carugio (Via Capellini 66) is good for antipasto and fried anchovies at lower prices.
Levanto (5 minutes by train or 20 minutes by ferry)
Levanto is immediately north of Monterosso on the same train line - one stop, 5 minutes, and a world apart in atmosphere. Where Cinque Terre is now primarily a tourism destination, Levanto still functions as a small Ligurian town with a proper market, a crescent beach that stretches 800m, and surf that draws a different crowd from the day-trippers in the villages to the south.
Getting there: Train from any Cinque Terre village to Levanto takes 5–15 minutes and costs approximately €2.50 as of 2026. The ferry takes approximately 20 minutes from Monterosso.
What to do: Rent a surfboard (multiple shops on Piazza del Popolo, from approximately €25/half-day as of 2026), walk the beach, explore the 12th-century church of Sant’Andrea and the Castello above town, or take the trail south toward Monterosso through the vineyards (approximately 1 hour, no national park card required for this stretch).
Lunch: Osteria Tumelin (Via Gramsci 32) does local pasta and seafood in a vaulted room - approximately €30–45 per person as of 2026. Several casual beach bars on the seafront serve bruschetta and grilled fish at lower prices.
La Spezia (10–20 minutes by train)
La Spezia is the main city serving Cinque Terre and is often treated as purely a transit hub. It has more substance than that. The fish market on Via del Prione is one of the best in Liguria - open Tuesday through Saturday mornings. The Castello di San Giorgio has a good collection of Ligurian sculpture and prehistory (entry approximately €5 as of 2026). The Naval Museum (Museo Tecnico Navale) covers the history of the Italian navy with actual vessels, torpedo boats, and figureheads (entry approximately €3 as of 2026).
Getting there: Train from Riomaggiore approximately 10–12 minutes, approximately €3 as of 2026. From Monterosso, approximately 20 minutes.
Good for: Shopping and errands (La Spezia has real supermarkets), a proper sit-down lunch without the price premium of the villages, or a half-day cultural add-on before catching a train onward.
Lunch: La Posta del Gambero (Via del Prione 156) does Ligurian classics - trofie al pesto, stuffed mussels, fried anchovies - in the €30–40 per person range as of 2026.
Genoa (approximately 1.5 hours by train)
Genoa is a more committed day trip - most useful for travellers basing in Cinque Terre for several days who want an urban contrast. The city rewards a full day: the UNESCO-listed caruggi (medieval alleyways of the old town), the Palazzo Ducale, the Acquario di Genova (one of Europe’s largest aquariums), and the Palazzi dei Rolli on Via Garibaldi (a set of Renaissance palaces open to visitors). The port area (Porto Antico) has been well redeveloped and is pleasant in the evening.
Getting there: Direct trains from Riomaggiore or Monterosso toward Genova Piazza Principe or Genova Brignole - approximately 1.5 hours, approximately €10–16 as of 2026. Faster intercity trains cost more but save 30 minutes.
What to do: A guided Genoa tour handles the navigation in the labyrinthine old town. Independent travellers should start at Piazza De Ferrari, walk to Via Garibaldi for the palazzi, then descend into the caruggi around Piazza San Matteo and Via degli Orefici. The Acquario takes 2–3 hours.
Lunch: Trattoria Da Maria (Vico Testadoro 14) is the Genoese classic - pesto, minestrone alla genovese, farinata (chickpea flatbread) - in the €15–25 per person range as of 2026, cash only, communal tables. Arrive before 12:30 to queue.
Getting TO Cinque Terre from Major Cities
From Florence (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes)
Florence is the most popular origin point for Cinque Terre visits. The fast route uses the high-speed Freccia trains between Florence Santa Maria Novella and La Spezia Centrale (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, approximately €18–35 as of 2026 depending on class and booking window). From La Spezia, connect to the Cinque Terre Express - a short regional train that stops at all five villages. The full journey from Florence to Riomaggiore is around 1 hour 50–2 hours 10 minutes total.
Slower regional trains via Pisa take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes but are cheaper (approximately €12–18). They involve changing at Pisa Centrale.
For the best value: Book Trenitalia fast trains at least a week ahead; prices are significantly lower outside school holidays. The regional Cinque Terre Express is not reservable in advance - simply buy at La Spezia station.
Day trip viability: Yes, but leave Florence by 8:00–8:30am. You will have roughly 6 hours in the villages before needing to return. Two or three villages is realistic; hiking the full trail is not. Staying overnight transforms the experience.
From Pisa (approximately 1 hour)
Pisa is the closest major city to Cinque Terre and the most practical origin for a day trip. Regional trains from Pisa Centrale toward La Spezia stop directly at the Cinque Terre villages - no change needed. Approximate journey times from Pisa: Monterosso 50–55 minutes, Vernazza 60 minutes, Manarola 65 minutes, Riomaggiore 70 minutes. Cost: approximately €8–12 as of 2026.

For a day trip from Pisa: Leave by 9am and you have a full day in the villages. Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport is also well positioned - travellers flying into Pisa can reach Cinque Terre in approximately 1 hour 10–20 minutes total by train.
From Milan (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours)
Milan is the furthest major origin in this guide, but still feasible. Fast trains from Milano Centrale run to La Spezia Centrale in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes (approximately €25–50 as of 2026). From La Spezia, connect to the Cinque Terre Express as above. Total journey: approximately 2 hours 50–3 hours 10 minutes to the villages.
Some trains require a change at Genova Piazza Principe; direct services are less frequent. Check Trenitalia for direct Milano–La Spezia options when booking.
Day trip viability from Milan: Just about possible if you leave by 7:00–7:30am, but the round trip takes 5–6 hours of travel for 4–5 hours in the villages. A single overnight stay in Cinque Terre or La Spezia is strongly recommended over a pure day trip from Milan.
Practical Notes
Cinque Terre Express day pass: The regional train running between all five villages (and La Spezia) operates as the Cinque Terre Express. A day pass for unlimited travel on this route costs approximately €16 as of 2026, or it is included in the Cinque Terre Card (which also covers the hiking trails, bus, and ferry within the park).
Ferry timetables: Ferry services between villages and to Portovenere are weather-dependent and seasonal (April–October approximately). Always check the morning of travel - rough seas can cancel services with short notice.
Booking train tickets: Trenitalia’s fast trains (Frecce) require advance booking; regional trains do not and can be purchased at the station. For routes from Florence or Milan, booking at least 3–7 days ahead typically saves €10–20 per journey.
