Monopoliโs food is the food of an active Adriatic fishing port: fresh, unfussy, and dominated by whatever the boats landed that morning. The restaurant cooking reflects the same instinct โ at the better places, simplicity is the point. The Puglia non-seafood kitchen (orecchiette, burrata, lampascioni, fave e cicoria) is also present and generally good, but the seafood is the reason to eat particularly well in Monopoli.
What to Eat
Grilled Octopus (Polpo alla Brace)
The signature dish of Monopoliโs port restaurants. Octopus braised slowly to tenderise, then finished over a hot wood grill until the surface chars while the interior stays yielding. Served simply โ sometimes with cannellini beans, sometimes just with olive oil and lemon. At a harbour-side restaurant in summer, with a carafe of Puglia white, this is about as good as the regionโs cooking gets.
Expect approximately โฌ14โ22 for a main-course portion at a seafood restaurant as of 2026.
Pasta con Ricci di Mare
Sea urchin pasta (spaghetti or linguine with raw sea urchin roe, olive oil, garlic, parsley) is the highest-stakes dish on Adriatic menus โ brilliant when the urchin is very fresh; underwhelming when it is not. In Monopoli, with a functioning fish market and direct Adriatic boat fishing, the ricci are typically fresher than at inland restaurants that use delivered product. In season (roughly October through April) it is worth ordering here.
Approximately โฌ16โ24 as of 2026 at a sit-down restaurant.
Fried Anchovies (Alici Fritte)
Whole anchovies, dredged in semolina flour and fried in hot olive oil until the skin crisps. Served with half a lemon. Best eaten immediately, standing at a port-side bar, with a cold beer. The alici caught in the northern Adriatic are smaller and more flavourful than the large preserved anchovies most people know from pizza. This is a genuinely different food.
From approximately โฌ6โ10 for a portion at a bar or simple trattoria; approximately โฌ10โ14 at a sit-down restaurant as of 2026.
Tiella Barese (Riso, Patate e Cozze)
The great Bari-province baked dish โ a slow-baked casserole of layered rice, potato slices, mussels, courgette, tomato, and pecorino. The mussel liquid and the vegetables steam into the rice as it bakes; the result is dense, savoury, and not what most visitors expect from a seafood dish. Home cooking more than restaurant fare; ask at traditional trattorias whether it is available.
Approximately โฌ12โ16 as a main course where it appears as of 2026.
Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa
The Puglia pasta staple is as good in Monopoli as anywhere in the region. Handmade orecchiette (the ear-shaped pasta) tossed with wilted rapini, garlic, chilli, and anchovy in olive oil โ finished with breadcrumbs. The bitterness of the greens, the richness of the oil, and the chew of the pasta work together in a combination that is much better than it sounds. Approximately โฌ9โ14 as of 2026 at a sit-down trattoria.
Burrata
Made fresh in the inland Puglia towns and reaching Monopoliโs restaurants the same day. At its best served at room temperature (not cold from a fridge) with ripe tomatoes, a generous pour of olive oil, and good bread. At a restaurant, expect approximately โฌ8โ12 for a 250g portion as of 2026.
Cozze (Mussels)
Adriatic mussels cooked several ways: in white wine and garlic (cozze al vino bianco), baked with breadcrumbs and parsley (cozze gratinate), or raw on the half-shell with lemon (crudi). The cooked preparations are better than the raw at most restaurants. A half-kilo of cozze al vino bianco at a port-side trattoria costs approximately โฌ8โ12 as of 2026.
Lampascioni
The wild hyacinth bulbs of Puglia appear in Monopoli restaurants as part of the antipasto plate โ pickled in olive oil and vinegar, or slow-roasted. Bitter, slightly astringent, genuinely characteristic of the inland Puglia kitchen. Usually sold jarred at the food shops (approximately โฌ4โ8/jar as of 2026).
Where to Eat in Monopoli
Il Guazzetto
Via Garibaldi 6, in the old town โ the most consistently well-reviewed seafood restaurant in Monopoli. The menu follows what arrived at the market; the mixed seafood antipasto (approximately โฌ14) is a useful survey of the dayโs catch. Pasta with ricci when in season (approximately โฌ18); grilled fish approximately โฌ20โ28 per portion. Total bill approximately โฌ40โ55 per person with a good glass of wine as of 2026. Booking advisable for dinner in July and August.
La Lampara
Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo 1 โ a seafront restaurant with outdoor terrace facing the Adriatic, good for grilled fish in summer. Less intimate than Il Guazzetto; better for groups or family dinners with a sea view. Similar price range: approximately โฌ35โ50 per person as of 2026. Walk-ins generally possible except weekend evenings in August.
Osteria LโUva e il Malto
Via Garibaldi โ a wine bar and osteria that pairs well-chosen Puglia wines with simple food: cheese and cured meat plates, bruschetta with lampascioni or burrata, small pasta dishes. Better for a light dinner or long aperitivo than a full meal. Wine by the glass from approximately โฌ5; small plates from approximately โฌ8โ14 as of 2026.
Port-Side Bars and Friture
The bars along the old port (around Piazza Garibaldi and the waterfront) serve fried seafood plates from early afternoon โ fried anchovies, fried squid rings, fried shrimp. These are not restaurants with table service; buy at the counter and eat standing or on a harbour bollard. From approximately โฌ6โ10 per portion; cold Peroni from approximately โฌ3 as of 2026. One of the better cheap-food experiences in the region.
Market Breakfast and Coffee
Piazza Orto Maltese market (Tuesday and Friday mornings): the fish market is at the working end; the surrounding stalls sell bread, fruit, and local cheese. A good place to buy ingredients for an apartment kitchen or just to see the morning energy of a functioning market town.
Bar Del Porto (Via Garibaldi) โ reliable for espresso and cornetti from approximately 07:00. A good spot for breakfast before the market or before catching an early train.
Eating by Time of Day
Breakfast (07:00โ09:30): bar espresso and cornetto from approximately โฌ1.50โ2. The bar at the port is the most atmospheric.
Market visit (07:00โ12:00, Tuesday and Friday): Piazza Orto Maltese fish market.
Lunch (12:30โ14:30): a full seafood lunch at Il Guazzetto or La Lampara, or port-side fried fish for a cheaper option.
Aperitivo (18:00โ20:00): Osteria LโUva e il Malto or the harbour bars. Spritz or local white wine with small plates.
Dinner (20:00 onwards): the old-town restaurants fill from 20:30; locals eat later (21:00). The pace is slower and less frenetic than in Polignano.
Wine and Beer
Local wines to ask for: Locorotondo DOC bianco (the white from the Valle dโItria, 30 minutes inland), Verdeca, Primitivo di Manduria (red), Negroamaro. A carafe of house wine at a trattoria is approximately โฌ8โ14 as of 2026.
Local craft beer is present at a few bars in the old town โ Puglia has a growing microbrewery scene, mainly Primitivo-yeast or citrus-influenced ales. Ask what is local.
