Every third weekend of July, Venice throws one of Italy’s most spectacular festivals - and this year the Festa del Redentore falls on July 18–19, 2026. The Saturday night fireworks display over the Giudecca Canal is among the finest in Europe, drawing Venetians and visitors out onto the water by the thousands.

What Happens and When

The Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer) dates to 1577, when Venice held a thanksgiving mass after surviving a devastating plague. The tradition has continued ever since, anchored by two main moments:

Saturday night (July 18): A temporary pontoon bridge is assembled across the Giudecca Canal, connecting the Zattere to the Redentore church. At around midnight, a 45-minute fireworks display launches from barges on the water. The sky above the canal fills with synchronized color; the reflections on the lagoon double the effect. Venetians watch from gondolas and boats moored side by side in what becomes a floating city.

Sunday (July 19): A religious procession crosses the pontoon bridge to the Redentore church, followed by a votive mass. The afternoon sees traditional rowing races (voga alla veneta) on the canal.

Where to Watch

The best vantage points for the fireworks are:

  • From a boat - the classic Venetian way. Hire a gondola or small motoscafo in advance; prices on Redentore night are steep but the experience is unlike any other
  • Fondamenta Zattere - the long waterfront promenade on Dorsoduro fills from late evening, free, and close to the Giudecca Canal
  • Riva degli Schiavoni - further away but also popular and accessible
  • Lido di Venezia - a less crowded alternative with good sight lines across the lagoon

What to Book Early

Redentore weekend is one of the busiest in Venice’s summer calendar. Hotels fill fast and restaurants along the Zattere book up. The pontoon bridge itself is open to pedestrians from Saturday morning through Sunday evening - crossing it on foot is free and gives a perspective on the Giudecca Canal you don’t normally get.

Getting Around on Redentore Night

Vaporetto services are heavily disrupted on Saturday night due to boats moored across the canal. Lines 2 and 4.1 are suspended or diverted. Plan to walk - distances in Venice are manageable, and the city feels extraordinary on this particular evening.
