Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) occupies a dramatic position on a reclaimed peninsula in the Ligurian Sea, just 6 km west of the city centre. Despite the short distance, there is no direct train link - your options are taxi, the Volabus airport shuttle, or a private transfer. Here is what each option looks like in practice.
Airport Taxi
White taxis queue at the dedicated rank directly outside the arrivals exit. The drive to central Genoa takes 15–20 minutes via the A7/A10 tangenziale.
Metered fare: Genoa taxi fares are metered (not fixed-rate for the airport route as of 2026). Typical fare to the city centre - Piazza De Ferrari, Brignole station, or the Porto Antico area - is approximately €20–€30. Night rates (22:00–06:00) and Sunday surcharges add around 10–15%.
Large luggage, extra passengers beyond the standard 4-person capacity, and journeys beyond the centre (e.g., Santa Margherita Ligure, approximately 25 km) will increase the fare accordingly.

Volabus (Airport Shuttle)
AMT operates the Volabus shuttle connecting the airport with Genoa’s main train stations and the city centre.

From Principe station you are close to the ferry terminals for Sardinia and Corsica routes.
Last service: Volabus typically operates until around midnight from the airport. Flights arriving after that window need a taxi or pre-booked transfer.

There is no direct train from the airport to the city. However, if you take the Volabus to Genova Principe station, you can connect to the regional rail network for the Riviera di Levante coast:

- Genova Principe → La Spezia (for Cinque Terre): approximately 1 hour 20 minutes
This bus-plus-train option is the cheapest way to reach the Ligurian coast, but requires a Volabus ticket plus a regional train ticket and involves luggage handling at the station.
Rental Car
Hertz, Avis, and Europcar have desks in the small arrivals terminal. The Ligurian highway network connects well from the airport: the A7 leads east toward Genoa centre and the A10 west toward Savona and the French border.
Driving in central Genoa’s historic caruggi (alleyway) district is not practical and unnecessary for most visitors. Paid parking is available at the Porto Antico car park and at Piazzale Kennedy.

Useful Tips
Cinque Terre connections: GOA is a popular entry point for Cinque Terre visitors. The bus-and-train combination (Volabus to Principe + regional train to Riomaggiore or Vernazza) works well and costs around €15 total, but takes around 2 hours with connections. A private transfer to La Spezia and then a short hop by local train is faster if you land with lots of luggage.
Portofino and the Riviera di Levante: Private transfer is by far the most convenient option for reaching Portofino, Rapallo, or Camogli directly from the airport. Traffic on the coastal road in summer (June–August) adds 15–30 minutes versus the estimates above.
Ferry connections: If you are connecting to a Sardinia or Corsica ferry from Genoa, the GNV, Tirrenia, or Corsica Sardinia Ferries terminals are near Genova Ponte dei Mille. A taxi from the airport to the ferry terminal takes approximately 15–20 minutes and costs approximately €25–€35.
